Unsigned envelope handwritten by Van Buren
Autograph envelope unsigned. 9¾x7¾, with "Hudson" watermark. Addressed to
"The Honble/Mr [illegible]/and/Mrs [illegible]". With docketing
identifying the sender as Van Buren and pencil notation in unknown hand in upper
left corner. Van Buren (1782-1862), a shrewd politician known as "The
Little Magician" and "Old Kinderhook", served as eighth U.S. President
from 1837-1841. Over his long political career, Van Buren was also a U.S.
Senator from New York (1821-1828), Governor of New York (1829),
Secretary of State (1829-1831), U.S. Minister to Great Britain
(1831-1832) and Vice President (1833-1837). Encapsulated in plastic.
Lightly toned, stained and creased. Wax seal remnant and tear at lower edge.
Lightly discolored at top edge by wax seal remnant on verso. Folded four times
vertically and horizontally and unfolded. Worn, torn, toned and with pinholes
along folds. Otherwise in fine condition.
