MARTIN VAN BUREN
The Vice President invites three Congressmen to dinner.
Autograph Letter Signed: "M. Van Buren" as Jackson's Vice President, 2p, 5x7¼, front and verso. No place, but Washington, 1835 January 11.To General Hathaway. In full: "I have asked a few of our members to take a sociable dinner with me tomorrow (Monday) at 5 Oclock, & I would be very happy if you, & Messrs Schenck & Bean would join them. Will you please to let me know this Evening whether I may expect the pleasure of your & their company." SAMUEL G. HATHAWAY of New York, Major General in the New York Militia, served one term in the House of Representatives, 1833-1835. FERDINAND S. SCHENK of New Jersey and BENNING M. BEAN of New Hampshire served two terms in the House (1833-1837). All three Congressmen were Democrats. Written in the year of the presidential nominating conventions. At the time of this letter, the Whig caucuses in Massachusetts and Tennessee nominated Daniel Webster and Hugh L. White respectively. By promoting several different candidates, the Whigs hoped to have the election devolve to the House of Representatives. Perhaps this dinner meeting of Democrats spoke of election strategies. In May, Van Buren and Colonel Richard M. Johnson were nominated for President and Vice President at the Democratic National Convention. Until Vice President Bush was elected President in 1988, Van Buren was the last incumbent Vice President elected President. Lightly soiled. Light ink transference. Lightly stained at blank areas. Light tape repair on blank verso at left horizontal fold.
