MARTIN VAN BUREN
In Paris, the former President sends thanks for a special ticket to the Universal Exhibition.
ALS: "M. Van Buren", 1p, 8¼x8½. Paris, 1855 May 14. To Mr. Field, probably Maunsell B. Field. In full: "I return the Diplomatic Ticket & beg you to make my best acknowledgments for it in the proper quarter. I prefer to adhere to my Engagement with Mrs. Field & will presume to be at your House at 11 tomorrow morng." MAUNSELL BRADHURST FIELD (1822-1875) had become Secretary of the U.S. legation in Paris under John Y. Mason in 1854. In 1855, Field was appointed President of the American commissioners to the Universal Exhibition in Paris. The "Diplomatic ticket" referred to by Van Buren was most likely a special ticket to Paris' first "world's fair". Democratic President Van Buren lost his bid for reelection in 1840 to Whig William Henry Harrison. He toured the south in 1842 and unsuccessfully sought the Democratic nomination for President in 1844. In 1848, Van Buren was the Free Soil candidate for President. He received less than 300,000 votes out of almost three million cast. Van Buren supported Democrat Pierce for President in 1852 and then toured Europe. This letter was written from Paris, France in 1855. Some yellow "haloing" of words from a chemical reaction of the ink. Some yellowing at blank areas. Ink transfer from folding. Folds, vertical fold touches the "B", lightly creased.
