The Vice President sends a former U.S. Senator's letter to a Cabinet member because he takes "no part in appointments".
ALS: "M. Van Buren" as Jackson's Vice President, 1p, 7¾x9¾. Albany, 1835 September 22. To Secretary of the Navy Mahlon Dickerson. In full: "I have written to Waggerman (sic) that I take no part in appointments but that I have sent your his letter to you & that you will be as ready to gratify him if you can as I would. In haste." Addressed by Van Buren on verso: "M. Dickerson Esqr/Secy of the Navy/Washington". Postmarked: "Albany, Sep 22." When Vice President Van Buren wrote this letter, he was the 1836 Democratic presidential candidate, having been nominated at the May 20-22, 1835 Democratic National Convention in Baltimore. When Van Buren was sworn in as the eighth U.S. President in 1837, he retained DICKERSON as his Secretary of the Navy. GEORGE A. WAGGAMAN had been a National Republican U.S. Senator from Louisiana from 1832-1835. When he left Washington, he returned to the practice of law in New Orleans and also resumed sugar cane growing. Waggaman died in 1843 of injuries received in a duel. Portion cut out at right and left from seal, with remnants at left. Show through from tape and light glue on verso, some show through of writing. Mounting remnants at corners of verso. Folds, light vertical fold touches the "n" in Van.
