Martin Van Buren sends an autograph letter asking for help in a business matter.
Autograph Letter Signed: "M.V. Buren" as U.S. Senator, 1p, 7¾x9¾. No place, 1828 September 29. To T.W. Olcott. In full: "I have been under the necessity of purchasing some property upon which Whiting & Glouck had encumbrances which it is not convenient for me now to discharge. Will you do me the favor to get the enclosed note substituted for theirs by the company of which I understand you are fac totum (sic)." Factotum is a person employed to do all kinds of work or business. Partial note at the bottom by Olcott: "returned the note to Mr V Buren it not being necessary to renew till 1 Dec...." Martin Van Buren represented New York in the U.S. Senate from 1821 until December 20, 1828, when he resigned, having been elected Governor of New York. He was only Governor for nine weeks when he resigned to become Andrew Jackson's Secretary of State. Rectangular shading touches most text from an image laying against page. Mounting stains from verso's edge show through to left margin touching some letters. Light yellow stains. Horizontal folds, not at signature.
