MARTIN VAN BUREN. ALS: "M Van Buren", 1p, 7¾x9¾. Lindenwald, 1845 November 19. To Col Simpson. In full: "I send you the enclosed (not present) with much pleasure & am with best wishes for your success very truly your friend." Van Buren had sought the Democratic nomination for President in 1844 and had a majority of delegates' votes on the first ballot, but not the necessary two-thirds; Polk was nominated on the ninth ballot and Van Buren returned to his Lindenwald estate. In 1848, Van Buren's supporters teamed with antislavery Whigs and Democrats to form the Free-Soil party which nominated Van Buren for President and Charles Francis Adams, son of J.Q. Adams, for Vice President. Van Buren-Adams won 10% of the popular vote and no electoral votes as Whigs Taylor and Fillmore defeated Democrats Cass and Butler. Lightly creased. Minor ink transference when originally folded, else in fine condition.
