MARTIN VAN BUREN
As Minister-designate in London, Van Buren writes to a fellow Democrat, soon to be elected Mayor of New York. Van Buren's appointment, on the other hand, would be nixed by the Senate.
Manuscript LS: "M Van Buren", 1p, 8x12¾. London, 1832 February 24. To Gideon Lee, Myer Moses and W.P. Hallett. Marked "(Duplicate)" at upper left. Letters that had to cross the Atlantic were usually sent in duplicate in case the ship sank or was attacked. In full: "I enclose you my reply to the letter which you had the goodness to communicate to me, and beg you to accept for yourselves the assurance of my sincere regard, and my cordial thanks for the very kind & flattering manner in which you have been pleased to discharge your trust." VAN BUREN had been serving as Minister-designate to Great Britain. On January 25, 1832, his nomination was rejected by the Senate when Vice President John C. Calhoun (as President of the Senate) cast the deciding "nay" vote. Van Buren had served as Jackson's Secretary of State from March 1829 until his ministerial appointment. Running for reelection, Jackson repudiated Calhoun by selection Van Buren as his running mate in 1832. GIDEON LEE became Mayor of New York City in 1833 and later served in Congress. Lightly creased. Fine condition.
