Scarce Typed Letter Signed:
"M. Gorbachev", 1p, 8x11¾. No place, no date but 1992. On the Gorbachev Foundation stationery, The International Foundation For Socio-Economic & Political Studies. In Russian, translated in full: "The International Foundation for Socio-Economic & Political Studies (Gorbachev-Foundation) invites you to the presentation of the Foundation which will take place on March 3, 1992 at 6:00 P.M. The address is Leningradskiy Prospect, 5. We will be happy to see you among our friends." At bottom left: "We ask for your reply, if you wish to participate. Contacting phone numbers:" In 1987, Mikhail Gorbachev initiated a program of reforms to expand freedoms and democratize the political process through openness (glasnost) and restructuring (perestroika). He was awarded the 1990 Nobel Peace Prize for these reforms. On August 24, 1991, after a failed coup and a huge demonstration in favor of Boris Yeltsin, President of the Russian Republic of the U.S.S.R., Gorbachev resigned as Communist Party leader and several Russian republics declared their independence. On December 25, 1991, Gorbachev resigned as President of the Soviet Union (U.S.S.R.). The next day the Soviet Union ceased to exist and divided into separate republics. The presentation of the Gorbachev Foundation mentioned in this letter took place less than 10 weeks after Gorbachev resigned. Lightly creased, notes at right margin on verso lightly show through, else fine condition.
