Signatures: "Millard Fillmore" as President and "Daniel Webster" as Secretary of State, 1p, 6x3. [Washington], c. 1850-1852. On vellum, cut from a document. Vice President MILLARD FILLMORE succeeded to the presidency upon the death of President Zachary Taylor on July 9, 1850. Taylor's Secretary of State John M. Clayton resigned and was replaced, on July 22, 1850, by Massachusetts Senator DANIEL WEBSTER who had served as Secretary of State under Presidents Harrison and Tyler (1841-1843). Secretary of State Webster died in office on October 24, 1852. Webster and Fillmore were two of the three candidates for the nomination for President at the Whig National Convention, June 17-20, 1852. Winfield Scott was nominated on the 53rd ballot and lost to Democrat Franklin Pierce in November, nine days after Webster died. Heavily creased. Glue stains on verso show through, not touching signatures.
