As Commissioners of the Canal Fund, New York's Controller, Secretary of State and Treasurer allocate funds for purchase of a safe.
Autograph Document Signed: "Millard Fillmore", "A. Hunt", "Christopher Morgan", 1p, 6½x5. Albion, New York, 1848 March 18. All three have signed as Commissioners of the Canal Fund. In full: "Resolved that the sum of $32.33 be paid to Corning Hiram & Co for the safe furnished the collector's office at Albion, May 10, 1844." Related notes on verso relate to "Iron safe". New York's Canal Fund was responsible for management of the revenues and debt of the Erie Canal and other public waterways in the Empire State. All three signers were Whig politicians holding concurrent state executive offices. ALVAH HUNT (1798-1858), a merchant and former State Senator, was State Treasurer (1848-1851). CHRISTOPHER MORGAN (1808-1877), a former US Representative (1839-1843), was New York Secretary of State (1847-1851) and also Superintendent of New York City Public Schools (1848-1852). MILLARD FILLMORE served as New York State Controller from January 1, 1848 until his resignation on February 20, 1849, 12 days before he was sworn in as Vice President of the U.S. When President Zachary Taylor died in office on July 9, 1850, Fillmore became the 13th US President. Ironically Fillmore, a Northerner, followed policies more "pro-Southern", including extension of slavery to the territories acquired from Mexico, than his Louisiana predecessor. When the slavery issue tore the Whig Party apart, Fillmore refused to follow other northern Whigs into the Republican Party, instead running unsuccessfully as the 1856 Presidential candidate of the American ("Know Nothing") Party. Folds, light vertical folds touch the "Mi" and second "l" in Millard and the first "l" in Fillmore. Light show through of writing on verso. Overall, fine condition.
