MILLARD FILLMORE
Between congressional terms, Fillmore writes to a law client.
Autograph Letter
Signed: "Millard Fillmore" as
Congressman-elect, 1p, 7¾x12. Buffalo, New York,
1836 November 12. Addressed by him on verso to: "J. Dexter,
Esq./Counsellor &c/Albany/N.Y." Oval "Buffalo, NY, Nov 12" postmark.
In full: "I wrote you on the 13th
ult. in relation to Mr. Fairbanks, and on the day following received a letter
from his attorney in answer to mine, a copy of which I enclosed to you. Not
being certain as to some of the names I concluded to wait your direction before
I commenced a suit. Not having heard from you and fearing that my letter has
either miscarried or been misunderstood, I venture to call your attention to the
subject." In 1830, 30-year-old lawyer Millard Fillmore moved to Buffalo from
Aurora, New York. He soon became a partner with Nathan K. Hall and Solomon G.
Haven in the law firm of Fillmore, Hall & Haven. Fillmore, who served as
U.S. Representative from New York (1833-1835, 1837-1843), remained with the firm
until 1847, the year he was elected New York State Comptroller. The law firm was
considered one of the top in western New York and had a record of taking on the
most important law suits in its section of the state. Fillmore's former
partner Hall later served as Fillmore's Postmaster General (1850-1852). Remnant
of red wax seal at top center, tiny stains from seal touch signature. Lightly
creased in upper left margin, vertical fold touches "d" in Millard. Overall,
fine condition.
