MILLARD FILLMORE
While in Washington, he sends thanks for a New Year's present of lemons.
ALS: "Millard Fillmore", 2p, 4½x6¾, front and verso. (Washington), no date. To Miss Wilhelmina. In full: "I received with great pleasure your kind note accompanied by a very acceptable 'New Year's Present' of some very fine Lemons; for which please accept my grateful acknowledgments. These are evidently the growth of this climate and I intend to preserve them till my wife & daughter arrive that they may see what fine specimens of tropical fruits are grown in the national metropolis. Again accept my thanks for your favor and believe me Truly your friend." Fillmore's daughter, Mary Abigail Fillmore, was born in 1832. Fillmore served in Washington from 1833-1835 and 1837-1843 while a member of the House of Representatives and 1849-1850 while Vice President. His wife, Abigail, died of pneumonia on March 30, 1853, after catching cold during President Pierce's inauguration; his daughter died of cholera on July 26, 1854. Creased, not at signature.
