He writes as a Congressman during two different sessions re: books he
purchased for his work.
Manuscript DS: "M. Fillmore" as U.S. Congressman, 1p, 7¾x3¼. Washington, 1837 September 25. In full:
"Received of Messrs Gales & Seaton, Vols. 10 & 11 Register of Debates
and Vols. 1 & 2 of the old series making in all eight parts which I promise
to account for hereafter." On verso, ADS as a U.S. Congressman:
"Millard Fillmore". (Washington), 1839 March 5. In full:
"Understanding another set of the within mentioned works have been delivered
to the clerk of the House of Representatives for me, I desire him if that be the
case to return terms to Messrs Gales & Seaton." Fillmore served in
Congress from 1833-1835 and 1837-1843. The first White House library was
established in 1851 during his presidency at the urging of his wife. Folds,
1 vertical touches the "m" in Fillmore on the first note. Slight separations at
folds do not touch text. Nicked left edge. Tip of right corner
missing.
