MILLARD FILLMORE. Partly Printed Bond signed: "Millard
Fillmore" as Comptroller of the State of New York (and Whig nominee for
Vice President), 1p, 8x7¼. Albany, New York, 1848 October 12. Bond
No. 142. In part: "the People of the State of New York owe to John
Brown or his assigns, the Sum of Ten Thousand Dollars, bearing interest at the
rate of Six per Centum per Annum, from the first day of July, 1848, payable half
yearly on the first days of the months of July and January, at the Manhattan
Company...." On verso is a handwritten listing of seven interest payments of
$300 each and a note of explanation initialed by an unknown signer from the
state's treasurer's office. Four months before this bond was issued, Millard
Fillmore (1800-1874) had been nominated as General Zachary Taylor's running mate
for Vice President at the Whig Party Convention (held in Philadelphia, June 7-9,
1848). On November 7, 1848, just 26 days after Fillmore signed this bond, the
Whig ticket defeated Democrats Cass and Butler. On February 20, 1849,
Fillmore resigned as Comptroller after serving just 14 months in that office
(1848-1849). Thirteen days later, he was sworn in as Vice President. When
President Taylor died on July 9, 1850, Fillmore became the 13th U.S. President,
serving until 1853. He had begun his political career in the New York state
assembly (1829-1831) and had served as a U.S. Representative from New York
(1833-1835, 1837-1843). Lightly creased with folds, not at signature. Lightly
stained. Cancellation holes touch the "M" of Millard and the "i" and "m" in
Fillmore. Show through of writing on verso. Stained at upper blank margin and at
mid-right edge. Overall, fine condition.
