PATRICE M. de MacMAHON
Untranslated 1871 letter, handwritten, signed and dated by de MacMahon one month after the suppression of the Paris Commune
Autograph letter signed " Mac Mahon" as commander of the Army of the Versailles. 1 page, 5¼x8, on the letterhead of "Armeé de Versailles/Le Maréchal de France/Commandant en chef". June 28, 1871. In French, not translated. Near the end of the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871), a revolutionary government - the Paris Commune - took control of Paris from March 27, 1871 to May 28, 1871. This was the largest urban revolt in 19th century European history. de MacMahon, who was defeated by the Prussians at the Battle of Wörth, was given command of the Army of the Versailles and ordered to suppress the Paris Commune and the revolutionaries, called the "Communards". In doing so, de MacMahon's army summarily executed at least 10,000 people while losing 1,000 soldiers. de MacMahon (1808-1893, born Marie-Edme-Patrice-Maurice de MacMahon in Sully, Saône-et-Loire, France) led the assault on Malakoff in the Crimea (1855), led the successful campaign against the Kabyles in Algeria (1857-1858), turned defeat into victory at Magenta (1859) and helped the French win at Solferino in the war with Austria. In 1859, MacMahon was created Marshal and duc de Magenta. He later served as Governor General of Algeria (1864-1870) and President of France (1873-1879). Lightly toned, spotted, stained and creased. Folded in half horizontally and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
