RICHARD NIXON
Richard Nixon signs an engraving of the Lincoln Memorial.
Engraving signed: "Richard Nixon," 1p, 8x6 overall, oval image
3½x2½ (one surface). Captioned: "Lincoln Memorial." Noted at
the bottom to have been produced by the U.S. "Bureau of Engraving and
Printing." In RN: The Memoirs of Richard Nixon, the 37th U.S.
President writes that "while it is true that Lincoln is one of the
few greatest figures in history, he was a total pragmatist. He did not fight
the war for the purpose of freeing the slaves, although he was unalterably
opposed to slavery; and when he freed the slaves, he did not free them as an
end in itself-he did so as a purely tactical, military maneuver, freeing
only the slaves in the South but not in the Northern border states." Fine
condition.
