photo image (b/w, 2½x3½) at top. Richard M. Nixon (1913-1994) represented
California in the US House of Representatives (1947-1951) and Senate
(1951-1953), before attaining the Vice Presidency as the running mate of Dwight
D. Eisenhower (1953-1961). A narrow defeat at the hands of John F. Kennedy
in the 1960 Presidential election, and a failed bid for Governor of California
two years later, appeared to end Nixon's political career, but he bounced back
to achieve the nation's highest office in 1968. Nixon's 5½ years in the White House (1969-1974) included major
successes, including his landmark visit to the People's Republic of China
(1972), but ended with his resignation on the eve of a vote for impeachment in
