RICHARD NIXON
Lincoln Day dinner program (1965) signed as "Dick Nixon".
Program signed: "Dick Nixon", 6 pages, 6½x9¾. Program of the Lincoln Day Dinner at the Conrad Hilton Hotel, Chicago, February 25, 1965, sponsored by the United Republican Fund of Illinois. Signed in black ink on front cover. Richard M. Nixon (1913-1994) represented California in the US House (1947-1951) and Senate (1951-53) before attaining the Vice Presidency under President Eisenhower (1953-1961). A narrow loss to John F. Kennedy in the 1960 Presidential election, followed by a failed bid for the California governorship in 1962 appeared to end Nixon's political career. By traveling globally, writing on foreign policy, and attending many events such as this Lincoln Day dinner in Chicago, Nixon stayed in the public eye and maintained and strengthened his connections with Republican activists throughout the country. When he signed this program, 3½ months after Arizona Senator Barry Goldwater's landslide defeat at the hands of President Lyndon Johnson, the large-scale successes and failures of the Nixon Presidency (1968-1974) were still in the future. Lightly worn. Fine condition.
