RICHARD NIXON
Program from a 1965 dinner honoring Barry Goldwater, signed as "Dick Nixon".
Program signed: "Dick Nixon", 6½x9¾ when closed. Signed on front cover, beside a reproduced drawing of Goldwater. Program for "A Tribute to Barry," a dinner sponsored by the Republican National Committee on April 14, 1965. Featured speakers at the dinner were Nixon, Goldwater, and Ronald Reagan. After serving as a US Senator from California and Vice President in the Eisenhower administration, Nixon narrowly lost a Presidential election to John F. Kennedy in 1960. After an unsuccessful bid for the California governorship in 1962, a campaign which ended with a disastrous press conference in which he railed against the press, Nixon's political career seemed at an end. In the wake of Arizona Senator Barry Goldwater's landslide electoral defeat at the hands of President Lyndon Johnson in 1964, however, Nixon began a comeback which would land him in the White House four years later. Attendance at events like this one kept Nixon in the public eye and helped him to maintain old networks of support and build new ones. Ronald Reagan was the newcomer on the stage, his eloquent campaigning for Goldwater having shown Republicans that their party had a rising star. Reagan, elected Governor of California in 1968, would make a bid for the Republican Presidential nomination in 1968 and win the office 12 years later, but it was Richard Nixon who inherited the mantle of Republican leadership (and the Presidency itself) in 1968. Fine condition.
