RICHARD NIXON
Typed letter signed by Nixon three days after his 60th birthday and eight days before he was sworn in for his second term.
Typed letter signed: "RN" as President, 1 page, 8¾x6¾ on embossed White House stationery. The White House, Washington, January 12, 1973. Addressed to Mr. John S. McCowan, Talbot Hotel, High Street, Stourbridge, Worcestershire, England. In full: "Dear John: Your kind message of birthday greetings helped to make January 9 an especially enjoyable day for me, and this note is just to thank you for your thoughtful-ness and friendship. With my appreciation and best wishes. Sincerely," Nixon signed this letter during a particularly historic moment in his long and tumultuous life. On January 9, 1973, President Nixon celebrated his 60th birthday, and, eight days after he wrote this letter, he was sworn in for his second term as president of the United States. Nixon was re-elected after one of the greatest landslides in United States presidential history, in which he defeated South Dakota Senator George McGovern 49 states to one (Massachusetts) plus D.C. Nixon (1913-1994) was elected 37th President of the United States in 1968 after representing California in the U.S. House of Representatives (1947-1951) and Senate (1951-53) and serving two terms as Dwight D. Eisenhower's Vice President. He lost (1960), then won, extremely close Presidential elections (facing John F. Kennedy and Hubert Humphrey, respectively), then won re-election by a landslide against George McGovern in 1972. His re-election triumph rapidly turned sour, however, as the burgeoning Watergate scandal claimed more and more of his key aides and finally compelled his own resignation in the face of a possible impeachment on Aug. 9, 1974. On September 8, 1974, he received a blanket pardon from President Ford for any crimes he may have committed against the United States while President. A pragmatic conservative who gained an early reputation as an anti-communist but achieved diplomatic triumphs in relations with China and the Soviet Union, Nixon was a prolific writer in retirement, repairing his reputation and hastening his emergence as an elder statesman. Lightly soiled and creased. Small tear in lower right corner, which has been repaired with tape, and on top and bottom edge. Adhesive residue on back. Letter has been folded in half horizontally and unfolded. Otherwise, fine condition..
