Thanking a friend who gave him a spare tire for his drive from California to Washington after his first election to Congress.
Typed Letter Signed: "Dick" as Congressman, 1p, 8x10½. Washington, 1947 January 17. To Charles E. Cooper, Whittier, California. In full: "Under separate cover I am sending you one of the special calendars which are made up for the members of the House of Representatives. Each member receives seven of these calendars and I thought you might like to have one, since this is the first calendar in fourteen years issued by a Republican controlled Congress." Nixon adds a handwritten postscript: "P.S. Had a flat tire on the way/back here - so your tire came/in just right! Many thanks again." Just 14 days after being sworn in as a Member of Congress, his first elective office, Nixon writes to his friend, Charlie Cooper of Whittier, California, on his "Member-Elect" Congressional stationery. The 80th Congress (1947-1949) included Congressmen Richard Nixon, John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson. It is ironic that Nixon's political career began and ended on a flat note. Creased at folds, the flourishes of the "D" just touch a vertical fold, else fine condition.
