RICHARD NIXON
Richard Nixon sends birthday wishes to a woman as old as the Republican Party.
Typed Letter Signed: "Richard Nixon" as Eisenhower's Vice President, 1p, 7x9. Washington, 1954 March 23. To Mrs. Eva Grace Miles Emery, Long Beach, California. In full: "It is with a great deal of pleasure that Mrs. Nixon and I extend our congratulations and greetings to you as you celebrate your 'centennial' along with the Republican Party this year. Also, we would like to take this opportunity to express our wish that the blessings of health, happiness, and warm friendships may continue to be yours in the years to come." The Republican Party was born with the support of anti-slavery activists and individuals who believed that government should grant western lands to settlers free of charge. The first informal meeting of the party took place in Ripon, Wisconsin, a small town northwest of Milwaukee. The first official Republican meeting took place on July 6, 1854 in Jackson, Michigan. The name "Republican" was chosen because it alluded to equality and reminded individuals of Thomas Jefferson's Democratic-Republican Party. The new party adopted a platform, nominated candidates for state offices and produced two anti-slavery resolutions, one of which stated, "Resolved...in view of the necessity of battling against the schemes of an aristocracy, the most revolting and oppressive with which the Earth was ever cursed or man debased, we will cooperate and be known as Republicans." Lightly creased in blank areas. Light transference of letterhead at lower blank margin. Fine condition..
