RICHARD NIXON
Richard Nixon sends a typed letter of thanks for inquiring about his
dog "Brownie".
TLS: "Richard Nixon," 1p, 7¼x10½. New York, 1985 April 11.
To Miss Mary Catherine Riepe, Dover, New Jersey. In full: "I want
you to know how much I appreciated your recent letter with regard to
'Brownie'. He is not a thoroughbred but he is one of the gentlest and
affectionate dogs we have ever owned. On page 111 of the enclosed book
[not present] you will see the Irish Setter and the Yorkshire
we had during the White House years." On September 23, 1952, as Vice
Presidential candidate, Nixon delivered his famous "Checkers" speech on
nationwide television in which he defended his acceptance of a $18,000 fund from
supporters with business interests by maintaining that only political expenses
were paid from the fund. He did point out that he did receive a personal gift
which he was not going to return: a cocker spaniel named "Checkers." Usual
folds, else fine condition..
