RICHARD M. NIXON
Vice-President Nixon writes his regrets that he will not be able to participate n the 40th Anniversary Convention for the U. S. Junior Chamber of Commerce.
Typed Letter Signed: "Dick" as Eisenhower's Vice President, 1p, 8x10½. Washington, D.C., 1960 July 8. On Office of the Vice President letterhead to Uriel Blount, DeLand, Florida. In full: "I wish to thank you and your fellow Jaycees for the opportunity to participate in the memorable 40th Anniversary Convention of the U. S. junior Chamber of Commerce. Pat and I shall long have the most happy memories of the warn and enthusiastic welcome we received at the airport when we arrived in the early morning hours. Any weariness we might have had after three full days of traveling and appearances completely disappeared, I can assure you, and the typically generous Jaycee hospitality to wish we were treated in such large measure throughout our entire visit made our St. Louis stay a most enjoyable experience which we shall always remember with great pleasure. Recalling my own experiences as a Jaycee and my more recent participation in several national Junior Chamber functions, I only wish our schedule had permitted us to share in the good company and fellowship of more of the convention activities. While the convention probably marked the climax of your activity within the Jaycee organization, I am sure that this will be but a stepping stone to vigorous, new participation in the affairs of government. Probably never before has it been so important for all Americans to lend their active support to the policies, political parties and candidates for public office in which they believe. With every good wish, Sincerely,". Fold creases not at signature. Fine condition. Includes original mailing envelope, 8¾x3¾. Lightly stained at blank left margin. Ripped at upper margin. Otherwise, fine condition. Richard Milhous Nixon (1913-1994) was elected 37th President of the United States in 1968 after representing California in the U.S. House of Representatives (1947-1951) and U.S. Senate (1951-1953) and serving two terms as Dwight D. Eisenhower's Vice President (1953-1961). He lost (1960), then won, extremely close Presidential elections (facing John F. Kennedy and Hubert Humphrey, respectively), then won re-election by a landslide against George McGovern in 1972. Nixon's re-election triumph rapidly turned sour, however, as the burgeoning Watergate scandal claimed more and more of his key aides and finally compelled his own resignation in August 1974. A pragmatic conservative who gained an early reputation as an anti-communist but achieved diplomatic triumphs in relations with China and the Soviet Union, Nixon's prolific writing in his retirement years helped repair his reputation and hasten his re-emergence as an elder statesman.
