RICHARD NIXON
Richard Nixon sends a typed letter of thanks for the letter.
Typed Letter Signed: "RN" as President, 1p, 6¾x8¾. The White House, Washington, 1972 August 1. To Phil Regan, Santa Barbara, California. In full: "This is the first opportunity I have had to reply to your most thoughtful and encouraging letter of July fourteenth. You may be sure that all of us are delighted to know that you are going to be 'fighting' on our side between now and the election. You will be a great addition to our team! I greatly appreciated the suggestions you made concerning our efforts to obtain Democrat support and have forwarded a copy of your letter to John Connally and I am sure he will be in touch with you shortly. With appreciation and best wishes." Signed by President Nixon with his initials, which he reserved for friends. Former Texas Governor JOHN CONNALLY had served as Nixon's Secretary of the Treasury from February 11, 1971 until he resigned on June 12, 1972 to head a Democrats for Nixon organization that helped the Republican president carry Texas. Connally switched parties from Democrat to Republican in 1973, three months after the death of his mentor, Democrat Lyndon B. Johnson. Irish-American tenor PHIL REGAN (1906-1996) had appeared in 26 films in the 1930s and 1940s. Lightly creased. Slightly soiled at upper margin above embossed Presidential seal, pinhead-sized stain at blank left margin. Fine condition..
