RICHARD NIXON
Richard Nixon sends a typed letter of invitation to a meeting during the day and a dinner in the evening.
Typed Letter Signed: "Dick Nixon" as Eisenhower's Vice President, 1p, 8x10½. Washington, D. C., 1953 September 8. To Admiral Lewis L. Strauss, Atomic Energy Commission, Washington, D. C. In full: "This is just a note to extend a personal invitation to the first meeting of the President's Committee on Government Contracts to be held here in Washington on September 14. The initial business meeting will begin at 2:00 p.m. in Room 4104 in the Department of Labor Building. IN the evening, Mrs. Nixon and I would like to have you and Mrs. Strauss as our guests for an informal dinner at 7:30 p.m. at eh 1925 F Street Club where we may continue our discussion. I will be looking forward to seeing you, and I will appreciate it if you will let me know whether you and Mrs. Strauss will be able to join us for dinner. With all good wishes, Sincerely," Richard Milhous Nixon (1913-1994) was elected 37th President of the United States in 1968 after representing California in the U.S. House of Representatives (1947-1951) and U.S. Senate (1951-1953) and serving two terms as Dwight D. Eisenhower's Vice President (1953-1961). He lost (1960), then won, extremely close Presidential elections (facing John F. Kennedy and Hubert Humphrey, respectively), then won re-election by a landslide against George McGovern in 1972. Nixon's re-election triumph rapidly turned sour, however, as the burgeoning Watergate scandal claimed more and more of his key aides and finally compelled his own resignation in August 1974. A pragmatic conservative who gained an early reputation as an anti-communist but achieved diplomatic triumphs in relations with China and the Soviet Union, Nixon's prolific writing in his retirement years helped repair his reputation and hasten his re-emergence as an elder statesman. Fold creases through signature. File note at upper left corner. Fine condition.
