RICHARD M. NIXON
Letter from the President to Gib Crockett, the
editorial cartoonist of The Washington Star saying "thank you for the latest cartoon, "Don't Worry, Mr. President - I'll Always Have The Key!" I want you to know how much I appreciate your continued thoughtfulness and your generosity."
Typed Letter signed: "RN", 1 page 6¾x9. Washington, D.C., 1969 October 1. On White House stationary to Gib Crockett, The Washington Star, Washington, D.C. In full: "This is just a note to thank you for the latest cartoon, "Don't Worry, Mr. President - I'll Always Have The Key!" I want you to know how much I appreciate your continued thoughtfulness and your generosity. With my best wishes, Sincerely" Richard M. Nixon (1913-1994), the 37th President of the United States, had served previously in the US Navy, the US House and Senate, and the Vice Presidency (1953-1961). Narrowly defeated for the highest office by John F. Kennedy in 1960, Nixon defeated Hubert Humphrey and George Wallace to attain it in 1969. His term was marked by extreme highs and lows, the high points including his dramatic state visits to the Soviet Union and China in 1972 and his landslide re-election later that year. The low point came in August 1974 when, facing a certain vote of impeachment in the House of Representatives, he resigned the office. Gib Crockett (b. 1912), editorial cartoonist of The Washington Star, won the National Headliners Club award for best editorial cartooning in 1953. One horizontal mailing fold through center. Fine condition.
