RICHARD NIXON
Richard Nixon writes to Phil Regan thanking him for his support.
Typed Letter signed: "RN" as President, 1p, 6¾x8¾. The White
House, Washington, 1972 October 27. To Phil Regan, Santa Barbara,
California. In full: "This is just a note to say how delighted I was
to know that you are working with the Democrats for Nixon. The confidence and
understanding you have always shown will strengthen my efforts to meet the
challenges which face our country in the days ahead. With my appreciation and
best wishes." Signed by President Nixon with his initials, which he
reserved for friends. In July, Phil Regan, a Democrat, had written to
President Nixon, telling him of his support. President Nixon had told Regan
that he was forwarding his letter to John Connally, former Texas Governor who
had resigned as Nixon's Secretary of the Treasury to head Democrats for
Nixon. Eleven days after Nixon wrote this letter, on November 7, 1972, he
defeated Democrat George McGovern in a landslide, winning every state but
Massachusetts (and the heavily Democratic District of Columbia). Irish-American
tenor PHIL REGAN (1906-1996) had appeared in 26 films in the 1930s and
1940s. Lightly creased. Slightly soiled at upper blank margin. Fine
condition.
