RICHARD NIXON
President thanks a Senator for sustaining his veto of the Political Broadcasting Bill dealing with campaign spending.
Typed Letter Signed: "RN" as President, 1p, 6¾x8¾. The White House, Washington, 1970 November 25. To Senator Norris Cotton. In full: "I appreciate your vote on Monday to sustain my veto of the Political Broadcasting Bill. There is a need for reform in the area of campaign spending, but the vetoed bill was discriminatory, unenforceable and impractical. It would have made the situation worse rather than better. I am grateful for your support." Staple holes in upper left blank corner. Fine condition. With original White House envelope, 7¼x4¾, addressed to Cotton but without stamp or postal markings, indicating it was hand-delivered. Staple holes in left blank margin, lightly soiled, else fine. Also included is an unsigned photograph of Cotton pouring maple syrup (from New Hampshire, most likely) into a bottle held by Nixon. B/w, 10x8. Light surface creases, not evident head on, else fine. During his five years and 201 days as President, Nixon vetoed 42 bills; 36 were sustained by Congress, six were passed over his veto. Norris Cotton was Republican Senator from New Hampshire from 1954-1974. Both Cotton and Nixon had begun their terms in the House in 1947. Cotton served until 1954; Nixon became a Senator in 1950.
