PRESIDENTS RICHARD NIXON and GERALD R. FORD
The two men who served in the Oval Office signed this script that's framed!
Typescript Signed: “Richard Nixon” and “Gerald R. Ford/ 11/5/79”. 5¼x7. Dated November 5, 1979. One page. Message In Full: Now, therefore, I, Gerald R. Ford, President of the United States, pursuant to the pardon power conferred upon me by Article II, Section 2, of the Constitution, have granted and by these presents do grant a full, free, and absolute pardon unto Richard Nixon for all offenses against the United States which he, Richard Nixon, has committed or may have committed or taken part in during the period from January 20, 1969 through August 9, 1974. / In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this eight day of September, in the year of our Lord nineteen hundred and seventy-four”. This incredible piece includes the above excerpt from President Gerald R. Ford's speech on September 8, 1974, in which he pardons Nixon from his involvement in the Watergate Scandal. RICHARD NIXON (1913-1994) was the 37th President of the United States. His political ascent was gradual, unlike his decline from power due to the infamous Watergate scandal that ultimately led to his resignation from the highest political office in the country. He served as a United States Congressman in the House of Representatives (1947-1950) and the Senate (1950-1953), eventually earning a spot as Vice President on Dwight D. Eisenhower's 1952 ticket for President. After eight years as Vice President in the Eisenhower administration, Nixon chose to run for Governor of California. He lost the election to Pat Brown, a humiliating defeat for the man just a year ago one step away from the Oval Office. After the Republicans endured the disastrous 1964 elections, Nixon returned to politics and ran for President in 1968. His tenure as President was marred by the Watergate Scandal. His reelection organization was implicated in a break-in to the Democratic National Committee headquarters, and a series audio tapes proved his attempted cover-up of the incident using federal resources. Nixon resigned on August 9, 1974, giving way to Gerald Ford as President. FORD (1913-2006) was sworn in as the nation's 38th President (1974-1977) after previously served as Nixon's Vice President (1973-1974) following the resignation of Vice President Spiro Agnew, becoming the only man to have held both of the nation's highest offices without being elected to either. Ford, who was previously a U.S. Congressman from Michigan (1949-1973; Minority Leader, 1965-1973), lost his bid for election to a full four-year term partially as a result of his controversial pardon of his predecessor. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1999.Fine condition. Framed in the Gallery of History style: 30¼x22.
