Richard Nixon signs a typescript of his resignation letter.
Typescript signed: "With best wishes/from/Richard Nixon", 1p,
5¾x8. This resignation letter has been typed on a sheet of paper that Nixon
had previously signed. To Secretary of State Henry A. Kissinger. The
White House, Washington, 1974 August 9. In full: "I hereby resign the
Office of President of the United States." Nixon is the only U.S. President
to resign. Nixon's original letter of resignation was received by Secretary
of State Kissinger. It was sent to the National Archives. On June 25, 1948,
Congress passed a law delineating the resignation procedure of the President and
Vice President. The law dictates that the resignation be in writing directed to
the Secretary of State and that it be delivered to his office. Fine
