RONALD REAGAN
ALS on postcard from his post-Presidential office, thanking the widow
of former Chicago Cubs manager Charley Grimm for a birthday wish, signed
"Ron"
Autograph Letter signed: "Ron", 6½x4¼ Los Angeles,
California, February 2, n.y. Addressed in his hand to Mrs. Charles Grimm,
Chicago, Illinois. In full: "Dear Marion, Your card arrived a few days
sooner than my birthday, but that's just fine for me. Thank you for your card
and your warm good wishes. I'm always happy to hear from you and to have that
card from "someone special" is very special. Nancy joins me in wishing you
everything nice. Warmest regards" . President Ronald Reagan was a lifelong
baseball fan. He portrayed Hall of Fame pitcher Grover "Pete" Alexander in the
1952 movie, The Winning Team. In the 1930s, he broadcast Chicago Cubs
games on radio, often improvising colorful play by play coverage from brief wire
service reports. In this period, he became friends with Charley Grimm (d. 1983)
- manager of the last two Cubs teams to appear in a World Series (1932, 1945),
and his wife Marion. It was while covering the Cubs spring training in
California in 1937 that Reagan received his first offer of a movie contract.
As related in Reagan's second autobiography, An American Life, he missed
a Cubs game while auditioning in Hollywood, earning a "chewing out" from Charley
Grimm. 11000 Wilshire Boulevard was the address of President Reagan's office
after he left the White House. Fine condition.
