RONALD REAGAN
The Governor cannot help get the recipient's nephew home from Vietnam
since he's "not a candidate for any other office so won't be in a position to
help".
Draft Autograph Letter Signed: "RR" ("Reagan" in text)
as Governor of California, 1p, 8½x11. On his personal stationery from the
59th Annual Governors' Conference, United States Virgin Islands, October
16-24, 1967, but written in Sacramento and dated"11-7-67"
by Reagan's secretary, Cathy Davis. Stationery was printed for each Governor
at the conference and he took unused stationery, imprinted "GOVENOR RONALD
REAGAN/CALIFORNIA", home with him. Gilt seal at top center. The future
President writes to Mr. Tino G. Aguilera, Mexicali Baja, Calif. Mexico. In
full: "Please accept my heartfelt thanks for your warm welcome. Mrs.
Reagan & I enjoyed our brief stay in Mexico & look forward to a visit
when we can stay longer and see more of your country. I'm not a candidate for
any other office so won't be in a position to help in the matter you mentioned.
It is my understanding that men serving in Viet Nam are rotated home after a
certain period so perhaps your nephew will be home before there is a new Pres.
in our country. He is fortunate to have an Uncle as devoted as you. I hope he
will & all his fellows will soon be returned to their
families." Reagan's secretary Cathy Davis has penned the date above Reagan's
letter which she then retyped. Reagan indicated, by signing "RR", that he wished
the letter to be signed in full. This draft
was typed by Reagan's secretary for his signature. Although he writes he is
"not a candidate for any other office", nine months later, Reagan
received 182 delegate votes on the first ballot at the 1968 Republican National
Convention. He finished third behind the winning nominee, Richard Nixon and New
York Governor Nelson Rockefeller. Ronald Reagan (1911-2004) had two
careers: actor and politician. His first movie was Love is on the Air
(1937) and his 53rd and last film was The Killers (1964). In 1965,
he wrote his autobiography, Where's the Rest of Me?, a line from his role
as Drake McHugh in King's Row (1942). Reagan left his job hosting
television's Death Valley Days during the 1965-1966 season, when he
entered politics. Elected Governor of California in 1966, he was
reelected in 1970. Reagan began his campaign for the presidency and narrowly
lost the 1976 Republican nomination to Gerald Ford. He was elected
President in 1980 and was reelected in 1984. After leaving office in 1989, he
wrote his second autobiography, An American Life. On February 6,
2001, Reagan became just the third U.S. President to reach the age of 90.
