Unsigned, printed invitation to his second inauguration as Governor of California
Printed Invitation, unsigned, 5x7 when closed. 3x3 California seal on cover. Text reads in full: "The Inaugural Committee requests the honor of your presence to attend and participate in the Inauguration of Ronald Reagan as Governor of the State of California and Ed Reinecke as Lt. Governor of the State of California on Monday, the fourth of January, one thousand nine hundred and seventy-one in the City of Sacramento." Fine condition. Accompanied by three items: 4¾x6 vellum insert (fine condition); 7¼x5¼ mailing envelope, postmarked Sacramento, California 1970 December 18. Lightly worn at corners. 5½x4¼ reply envelope. Fine condition. Well-known for decades as an actor, Screen Actors Guild President and issue activist, RONALD REAGAN, later to become fortieth President of the United States, had never held public office before being elected Governor of California in 1966. He was easily re-elected in 1970. His running mate on both occasions was Edward Reinecke, a two-term Republican Congressman. Reinecke unsuccessfully sought the governorship in his own right in 1974. He lost to Edmund Gerald Brown, Jr. ("Jerry Brown"), son of the 2-term Governor whom Reagan had defeated in1966. As Governor, Reagan balanced the state budget and espoused many of the conservative themes on which he would later run for President. Surprisingly, however, he signed a bill in his first term providing easier access to abortion, a signature he later said he regretted. Four items.
