On official letterhead to Mrs. Clifford Henderson [Marian Marsh], Palm Desert, California. In full: "Dear Marian: Thank you for your note. I was very pleased to hear from you. I wish I could be there on November 14, but Nancy and I are planning on a few days vacation at that time, because we've had so little time this year, and we're being pretty adamant about it. I know you understand. Please give our best to Clif. And have a fine dedication, Marian. Sincerely". RONALD REAGAN (1911-2004), the 40th President of the US (1981-1989), was first elected Governor of California in 1966. He was re-elected in 1970, less than two weeks after he wrote this letter. He never appeared in a film with actress MARIAN MARSH (1913-2006), whose flourishing film career of the 1930s (Svengali, 1931) was winding down just as Reagan's star was beginning to rise. For many years, Marsh was married to Clifford Henderson, an aviation pioneer and the founder of the community of Palm Desert. The dedication to which Reagan refers was probably connected with Marsh/Henderson's pet project, Desert Beautiful, an environmental conservation and beautification movement which she had begun in the 1960s.
