A year before he is elected President, Hayes orders pamphlets on the centennial of Lexington and Concord.
Autograph Letter Signed: "R.B. Hayes", 1p, 5x8. Fremont, O., 1875 May 15. To Robt Clarke & Co., Cincinnati. In full: "I would like to have copies of the pamphlets published describing the Celebrations with poems & speeches &c &c at Concord & Lexington on the 19th April - the centennials - all at your convenience." In a signed postscript, Hayes has added: "P.S. Also any pamphlet &c about your Musical. H." Cincinnati bookseller and publisherROBERT CLARKE edited numerous historical pamphlets in the 1860s and 1870s. He authored a pamphlet entitled "The Pre-Historic Remains which were found on the Site of the City of Cincinnati, with a Vindication of the Cincinnati Tablet", which was printed privately in 1876. On April 19, 1775, the Revolutionary War began with the Battles of Lexington and Concord. Lightly creased, light folds (not at signature). Light ink transference from being folded. Tape remnants on edges of verso lightly show through in blank margin. Overall, fine condition.
