RUTHERFORD B. HAYES
Rutherford B. Hayes sends an autograph letter about choosing the President for the Ohio Wesleyan University at Delaware.
Autograph Letter Signed: "Rutherford B. Hayes", 1p, 5½x8½. Fremont, Ohio, 1888 August 20. To Rev. J.M. Buckly, D.D. In full: "Thanks for your letter on the Presidency of the University. No selection will be made at present. There is still a hope-faint to be sure-that Rev Dr B. will accept. If not, we may go on a year with the V.P. acting before final choice. I will be in New York in Oct. attending the Peabody Trust and hope I may be able to confer with you." Hayes was a trustee of Ohio Wesleyan University at Delaware, which was in need of a President, and was also a Director of the George Peabody Educational Fund that promoted Black education. George Peabody was a wealthy American banker and philanthropist. The Peabody Trust was founded by him in London in 1862. Still in existence, it is the largest charity and housing association dedicated to housing the poor in London. Lightly creased. Light folds. Staple holes at upper left. Irregular right edge. Overall, fine condition.
