RUTHERFORD B. HAYES
Rutherford B. Hayes sends an autograph letter with his rare full signature.
Autograph Letter Signed: "Rutherford B. Hayes", 1p, 5½x8½. Spiegel [Grove, Ohio], 1891 December 12. To Col. Nicholson. In full: "Gen. Van H. Bukey Parkersburg, West Virginia is the Secretary of the Army of West Va." This letter was written from the ex-president's home, Spiegel Grove in Fremont, Ohio just 13 months before he died at the age of 70. Hayes had been commissioned Major in the 23rd Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry in 1861, attaining the rank of Major General of Volunteers. He saw action at South Mountain (where he was wounded in 1862), the second Battle of Winchester, Fisher's Hill and Cedar Creek, where he was badly stunned when his horse was killed. Hayes later served as Republican Congressman from Ohio (1865-1867) and Governor of Ohio (1868-1872, 1876-1877) before being elected 19th U.S. President (1877-1881). JOHN PAGE NICHOLSON was Recorder-in-Chief of the U.S. Military Order. During the Civil War, he attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and later served as Chairman of the Gettysburg National Park Commission. VAN H. BUKEY had served in the Union Army in the 11th West Virginia Regiment. He was wounded in 1864 when his horse was shot from under him at the Battle of Snickers Ferry. Hayes usually signed "R.B. Hayes". Letters signed in full are scarce. Lightly foxed and soiled. Lightly creased, tape remnants on right edge of verso barely show through. Overall, fine condition.
