RUTHERFORD B. HAYES
Card signed by President Rutherford B. Hayes
Signature: "R.B. Hayes". 3½x2¼ card. On Nov. 7, 1876, Hayes
(1822-1893), Republican Governor of Ohio, defeated Democratic Governor
Samuel J. Tilden of New York in the closest electoral vote election in U.S.
history. In an election where all 20 disputed electoral votes of four states
eventually went to Hayes, the Republican won 185 to 184 in the electoral
college. Tilden had more popular votes (4.3 million to 4.0 million) but Hayes
won more states, 21 to 17. Hayes resigned as Governor of Ohio on March 2, 1877,
the day a special Electoral Commission declared him the winner just two days
before his presidential term began. Hayes declined to run for a second term in
1880. Mounting remnants on verso show through at upper blank area. Ink stains
through "a" of "Hayes". Lightly worn at corners and edges.
Otherwise, fine condition.
