Pratt as Justice of the Peace of Orwell, Ashtabula County, Ohio. After the Civil War, Major General Rutherford B. Hayes represented Ohio in the House of Representatives from March 4, 1865, to July 20, 1867, when he resigned, having been nominated for Governor of Ohio. Elected Governor, he served from 1868-1872. He ran unsuccessfully for Congress in 1872 and was again elected Governor in 1875, serving from January 1876 to March 2, 1877, the day the Electoral Commission declared Hayes the winner of the 1876 presidential election. Creased. Folds do not touch signature. Nailhead-size holes at blank upper left vertical fold. ½-inch and ¼-inch stains touch some text, soiling also. Signature in fine condition.
