The fifth President of Austria signs a 3½x2 card
Signature: "Theodor Köener", 3½x2. Typed beneath it: "Bundespräsident/der Republik Österreich" [Federal President of the Austrian Republic]. Theodor Köener (1873-1957) was an Austrian army officer in World War I, serving on the general staff and resigning as a general in 1924. That year he entered parliament as a Social Democrat, but was jailed under the fascist dictator Dollfuss and again by the Nazis after Germany absorbed Austria in 1938. After World War II he became Mayor of Vienna and was responsible for reconstructing the city, which had been heavily destroyed do to bombing. His party nominated him as candidate for president and won with slightly more than 51 percent of the vote. He was the first Austrian President directly elected by its citizens. He died in Vienna while still in office. He is no known relation to the nineteenth century poet of the same name. Lightly creased. Fine condition.
