THEODORE ROOSEVELT
Theodore Roosevelt sends a hand written letter of thanks for a kind note and to say that he is very busy.
Early Autograph Letter Signed: "Theodore Roosevelt", 1½p, 4½x6¾, separate sheets. 55 West 45th St (New York City), 1883 January 5. To James S. Lehmair. In full: "Many thanks for your very kind note, showing your usual cordial thoughtfullness (sic). The nomination was of course a very gratifying thing to me. I have now hardly a moment to myself, so I must ask you to excuse this hurried line." JAMES S. LEHMAIR was a New York City Republican leader. During the 1882 session of the Assembly, Roosevelt was the Minority Leader. The 23-year-old quickly rose to his party's leadership in his first term. When the Republicans became the majority in January 1883, Roosevelt was nominated for Assembly Speaker and was the favored candidate. He was defeated when deals were made among his opponents. The main reason for opposition to his candidacy, other than his youth, was that Roosevelt voted his own mind, at times against the wishes of his party. After both his wife and his mother died a year later on the same day, February 14, 1884, Roosevelt left the Assembly and moved to a ranch in the Dakota Territory, where he remained for two years. When he returned to New York City in 1886, with Lehmair's support, 28-year-old Roosevelt received the Republican nomination for Mayor of New York City but lost the November election to industrialist and Congressman Abram S. Hewitt. Horizontal fold touches signature. Nail head-size file holes at blank left margin. Shaded at mid-horizontal fold of integral leaf. Overall, fine condition.
