Autograph Letter Signed: "Theodore Roosevelt" as Civil Service Commissioner, 1½p, 5x8. United States Civil Service Commission, Washington, D.C., May 20th (no year). To Col. Hopkins. In full: "I have read the article carefully. It is very interesting, and I am really obliged to you for sending it to me. However, how it would make the orthodox shudder! Thanking you very sincerely for the pleasure you have given me." President Benjamin Harrison appointed Roosevelt a member of the Civil Service Commission on May 13, 1889 at an annual salary of $3,500. Reappointed by President Cleveland, Roosevelt pressed for strict enforcement of the Civil Service laws, annoying political party professionals. During his term, the number of jobs to come under the Civil Service classification more than doubled. Roosevelt resigned in 1895 to become President of the New York City Board of Police Commissioners. Folds, vertical fold touches between the "od" of Theodore.
