THEODORE ROOSEVELT and ELIHU ROOT. Partly Printed DS: "Theodore Roosevelt" as President and "Elihu Root" as Secretary of State, 1p, 22½x19. Washington, 1909 January 11. Appointment of Alban G. Snyder of West Virginia as U.S. Consul at Panama (City), Panama. Records show that ALBAN G. SNYDER was the U.S. Consul in Panama from 1914-1920. He had previously served as U.S. Consul in Bogota (Colombia, 1906), later serving in Christiania (Norway, 1921-1922) and Oslo (Norway, 1926). ELIHU ROOT (1845-1937) was Secretary of War (1899-1904), Secretary of State (1905-1909) and a Republican Senator from New York (1909-1915). He promoted international arbitration treaties and played an influential role at the Washington Naval Conference (1921-1922). President of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace (1910-1925), Root was awarded the 1912 Nobel Peace Prize. Paper seal affixed. Lightly creased. Slightly soiled. 3-inch stain runs along center horizontal fold touching 7 words of text. Nicked at lower edge. Pinhead-size file holes at left and right of mid-vertical fold. Vertical fold touches "ot" of Root.
