THEODORE ROOSEVELT
Former President calls for meeting of group aiding war-torn France.
Typed Document Signed: "Theodore Roosevelt", 1p, 8½x10¾. (New York City), 1918. On lightweight paper. In full: "We the undersigned, incorporators of the AMERICAN COMMITTEE FOR DEVASTATED FRANCE, INC., hereby consent that the meeting of incorporators and members be held at the Manhattan Hotel, 42nd. St, and Madison Ave, Borough of Manhattan, New York City, on Wednesday March 20th. 1918 at 5 P.M." President Theodore Roosevelt won the 1906 Nobel Peace Prize for his role in ending the Russo-Japanese War. He donated the proceeds to organizations that helped alleviate the sufferings of war. On July 14, 1918, less than four months after this scheduled meeting, Roosevelt himself would be touched by the effects of war. His youngest son, 20-year-old Quentin, was shot down in aerial combat in France. In the October 1918, issue of "Metropolitan", Theodore Roosevelt wrote, in part: "Only those are fit to live who do not fear to die; and none are fit to die who have shrunk from the joy of life and the duty of life. Both life and death are part of the same Great Adventure." The Armistice Treaty was signed on November 11, 1918. Two months later, on January 6, 1919, Roosevelt died in his sleep at the age of 60. Creased with folds, none touch signature. Lightly soiled. Overall, fine condition.
