THEODORE ROOSEVELT
Letter on White House stationery to The Outlook editor, Rev. Lyman Abbott, condemning "Tolman's very improper request." "I shall in the future be exceedingly wary of any relations with Tolman."
Typed Letter Signed: "Theodore Roosevelt" as President, 1p, 7x8¾. The White House, Washington, 1909 February 19. To Rev. Dr. Lyman Abbott, The Outlook, New York, N.Y. In full: "I enclose you a copy of a letter I have just received from Ambassador White and a copy of my reply to him [not present]. Of course I as (sic, am) sure that Mr. Howland knew nothing of Tolman's very improper request. Will you kindly show Mr. Howland this correspondence and ask him to let Mr. Tolman see it. I shall in the future be exceedingly wary of any relations with Tolman." REV. DR. LYMAN ABBOTT (1835-1922) succeeded Henry Ward Beecher as Editor-in-Chief of the "Christian Union" in 1881, continuing when the paper changed its name to "The Outlook" in 1893. ROOSEVELT left office just 12 days after writing this letter. Later in 1909, he published "Outlook Editorials" and, in 1911, became a contributing editor of "The Outlook". HENRY WHITE was U.S. Ambassador to France from 1906-1909. Roosevelt called him "the most useful man in the entire diplomatic service" (Allan Nevins, Henry White, Thirty Years of American Diplomacy, 1930). "Tolman" was probably sociologist William H. Tolman, a frequent contributor to The Outlook and the author of numerous books, including Social Engineering (1909). Lightly creased and soiled. Pinholes at upper left blank margin.
