THEODORE ROOSEVELT
Theodore Roosevelt sends a letter of congratulations for an appointment and
that he looks forward to an address.
Typed Letter Signed: "Theodore Roosevelt", 1p, 6¾x7¼. The Outlook,
Office of Theodore Roosevelt, New York, 1913 March 25. To The Hon. Laurence
O. Murray, Washington, D. C. In full: "Your appointment is one of the
things to which I look back with most satisfaction. I will gladly read that
address. You have done most admirable work. Faithfully yours," By 1910,
after only one year of the Taft presidency, Roosevelt became increasingly
unhappy with what he regarded as Taft's disloyalty and his abandonment of
Progressivism. On August 31, 1910, Roosevelt delivered an address at
Osawatomie, Kansas, outlining what he called the "New Nationalism", separating
his brand of Progressivism from Taft's. On November 4, 1910, he delivered a
policy address before the Iowa State Teachers' Association in Des Moines.
TR's travels and speeches around the country were extensively reported in the
press. Most likely this letter was written in response to a letter of
support. From 1909-1914, Roosevelt was a contributing editor at "The Outlook"
magazine. Fold creases not at signature. Fine condition.
