THEODORE ROOSEVELT
Eighteen days before the Republican National Convention, TR sends thanks Cleveland newspaper editor H. N. Rickey for his support.
Typed Letter Signed: "T. Roosevelt", 1p, 7x8. Oyster Bay, Long Island, 1916 May 20. To H.N. Rickey, Esq., Cleveland. In full: "That's a mighty nice letter of yours and I want to send you this line of personal thanks and acknowledgment." Journalist H.N. Rickey was Editor-in-Chief of "The Cleveland Press". Roosevelt, the Progressive Party presidential nominee in 1912, lost to Democrat Wilson but finished ahead of Republican Taft. At the June 7-10, 1916 Republican National Convention, Roosevelt received 65 first ballot votes. New York Governor Charles E. Hughes won the nomination on the third ballot. At the Progressive Party Convention held at the same time, Roosevelt was re-nominated, but he declined the nomination and supported Republican Hughes. At the time of this letter, written just 18 days before the conventions, 57-year-old Roosevelt was still a candidate for the Republican nomination, and newspaper endorsements were vital for nomination and election. Creased. Folds. Lightly soiled. Mounting remnant on verso lightly shows through to text. Rust paper clip stain at upper left. Upper right corner torn.
