THEODORE ROOSEVELT
The President signs a typed letter of mourning about the passing of a friend.
Typed Letter Signed: "Theodore Roosevelt" as President, 1 page, 7x8¾. The White House, Washington, 1908 November 17. To Claudius B. Spencer, Editor, Central Christian Advocate, Kansas City, Missouri. In full: "It was most kind of you to write me. I mourn the death of Mr. Thompson; I prized his friendship, and I feel that he was a great moral force and a great force for righteousness in this nation -as indeed, my dear sir, I have grown more and more to feel of the religious press, the longer I have been in public life. With high regard." CLAUDIUS B. SPENCER was editor of the "Central Christian Advocate", the official magazine of the Methodist Episcopal Church, from 1900-1927. Five years earlier, on February 26, 1903 in New York City, at the bicentennial of the birth of John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, President ROOSEVELT praised the Methodist Church, recognizing that it had "assumed a position of immense importance throughout the vast region west of the Alleghenies which has been added to our Nation since the days when the Continental Congress first met." Two commas inserted by Roosevelt. Shaded at margins with rectangular shading at lower right corner from prior framing. Erased notes (unknown hand) at upper margin. Signature lightly dampstained. Slightly soiled. Pinhead-size stain at date.
