THEODORE ROOSEVELT
The Vice President-elect introduces a civil service reform proponent to his gubernatorial successor.
Typed Letter Signed: "T. Roosevelt" as Governor of New York and Vice President-elect, 1p, 8x10½. Executive Chamber, Albany, 1900 November 22. To Hon. B.B. Odell, Jr., Governor-elect. In full: "Let me introduce to you Mr. George McAneny with whom I have been thrown into very close contact for many years. Mr. McAneny is the Secretary of the Civil Service Reform Association, and I give him this note so that he may have access to you at the different times when matters affecting the civil service law will come before you. I may mention that Mr. McAneny supported me for Governor and supported you for Governor also." Hero of the Spanish-American War, Rough Rider Colonel THEODORE ROOSEVELT was elected Governor of New York in 1898. At the Republican National Convention held in Philadelphia June 19-21, 1900, President McKinley was renominated and Governor Roosevelt was nominated for Vice President. McKinley's first Vice President, Garrett Hobart, had died in 1899. On November 6, 1900, McKinley-Roosevelt defeated Democrats William Jennings Bryan and Adlai E. Stevenson by 7.2 million to 6.4 million popular votes, 292-155 electoral votes and 28-17 states. That same day, former Congressman BENJAMIN B. ODELL, JR. (1854-1926), also a Republican, was elected Governor of New York. Transference of ink at lower blank margin from another letter being written on top of this one, folds do not touch signature, else in fine condition.
